Man succumbed to fatal DUI crash in Phoenix
Published On: 03-10-2017 in Category: Alcohol, Drunk driving, DUI
Every day, 28 people succumb to alcohol-related road accidents, which accounts for one death every 53 minutes, in the United States, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In most cases, drinking and driving are the major reasons behind life-threatening road mishaps.
Even at the start of this year, a man lost his life and three teens sustained major injuries in a fatal DUI collision in Phoenix. According to the Phoenix Police Department, the suspect, a 17-year-old driver, was under the influence of alcohol while he was driving a stolen vehicle, along with his three co-passengers, girls aged 13, 14 and 15 years. The speeding car of the accused, apparently, collided with the vehicle of Dale Curtis, 61, near Seventh Street and San Juan Avenue, south of Bethany Home Road, leading to the death of the elderly man and causing serious injuries to the three teenage girls.
According to the eye witnesses, the accused was driving at an accelerated speed with no headlights before hitting the other vehicle. The accused was trying to flee the accident scene, when he was finally stopped by the police officers nearby. Police arrested the teen driver on charges of manslaughter, car theft and driving under the influence. He was later booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility until further notice.
Rising DUI-related crashes in US
Alcohol is entwined in the American lifestyle, in fact, making it a socially and legally accepted drug. At the same time, it is a strong driving force in many social problems today. Theft is just another weakness that many people fighting substance abuse grapple with. Precisely, most people who indulge in small-time thefts and robbery usually commit such crimes under the influence of alcohol. After gulping a couple of drinks, such people generally tend to lose control over their cognitive functions such as reasoning, rational thinking and judgment.
It has been found that people fighting any kind of addiction are prone to lying, which could be attributed to their search for newer opportunities to procure drugs and satisfy their cravings. It is, however, not easy to break the vicious cycle of addiction to any substance because of the complexities involved. It takes patience, compassion, specialized treatment and a lot of care during the entire treatment process to get rid of harmful consequences of substance abuse. It is important for people to realize that alcohol mars the potential of a person to think clearly and to make quick decisions in a fast-changing environment on roads.
